This service provides comprehensive support for Oakland University's Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) system. Use this page to troubleshoot Microsoft Authenticator issues, request a hardware security key, or get assistance registering/deactivating a key on your NetID account.
Who is Eligible?
All users with an active NetID account are required to use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to log into their accounts. Most users use the Microsoft Authenticator app as their primary MFA method.
Users who are unable to enroll in Microsoft Authenticator can request a physical hardware security key to use as an alternative, subject to the following criteria:
- Students: Students requesting a security key may require final approval from the Division of Student Affairs and/or Disability Support Services (DSS) before receiving their security key.
- Faculty & Staff: Before submitting a request, please check with your department to see if security keys are provided directly by your department.
Prerequisites and Expectations
Request a Security Key
- Requests are subject to review and approval based on eligibility requirements.
- You will receive updates directly through your support ticket regarding your approval status and instructions on when and where your key will be available for pickup.
Activate or Deactivate a Security Key
UTS will update your NetID account permissions to allow security keys.
- Without Authenticator: UTS will issue a Temporary Access Password (TAP) so you can self-register your key online.
- With Authenticator: You do not need a TAP—you can manage your security keys directly through mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info.
- In-Person Support: You may also bring your security key to the OU Technology Center (Oakland Center, Room 44) during business hours for walk-in assistance.
Report an Issue with Microsoft Authenticator
Submit a ticket if you are experiencing technical difficulties with Microsoft Authenticator, including:
- Not receiving push notifications or prompt codes.
- Account enrollment or device transition errors.
- Lockouts due to a lost, stolen, or upgraded mobile device.
A technician from the OU Technology Center will contact you to troubleshoot the issue or escalate your ticket as needed.
