Data Encryption

Data encryption protects sensitive information on university-managed devices by requiring secure authentication before access. All macOS devices deployed by University Technology Services (UTS) use FileVault, while all Windows devices use BitLocker. Encryption keys are securely stored in our management systems to ensure data recovery if needed.

Who is Eligible?

If a user is locked out of their computer and needs the recovery key, they must submit a request here or contact the OU Technology Center. UTS may also have recovery keys for personally owned or unmanaged devices in some cases where the user signed into the device with their Oakland University Microsoft 365 account.
