Phishing (Phish Tank)

Phishing is a type of Social Engineering attack in which a bad actor poses as a trusted or reputable source and sends fraudulent emails with the intent of manipulating victims into revealing personal or confidential information, or executing malicious software. If you believe you receive a phishing email, you may report it to University Technology Services (UTS) or if you believe you accidentally clicked on a phishing email, you may submit a service request.

How can I Report a Phishing Email to UTS Security Team?

You can help protect the University by submitting a new or novel emails to the UTS Security Team for review and inclusion in our phishing examples library. Complete the following steps:

  1. Open Webmail (webmail.oakland.edu) in a browser
  2. Open the phishing message
  3. Forward the email to phishnet@oakland.edu with a Subject Line of: "Phishing Example"
  4. Next to Reply, click More
  5. Click Show Original
  6. Select Copy to clipboard
  7. Create a new email and paste this information into it
  8. Send the new email to phishnet@oakland.edu with a Subject Line of: "Phishing Example - Show Original"

What Should I do if I Clicked a Link Contain in a Phishing Email?

If you interacted with a phishing email by clicking a link please follow the steps below. If you had additional interactions such as emailing/calling the malicious actor, providing NetID credentials, or installing software submit a service request immediately. 

If the event occurred on a University owned device, submit a service request and request a malware scan.

  • Reset your GrizzlyID PIN, NetID, and ADMNET passwords.
  • Reset your Banner Password (if applicable)
  • Complete the Gmail Security Checklist 
  • Review your DUO Account and ensure that no additional devices have been added to your account
  • Review your OU account for signs of suspciious activity. Including:
    • Personal and Direct Deposit Information (as appliable) using Sail
    • Registration Status and Cource enrollment (if appliable) using MySail 
    • Webmail settings such as address book, reply to address, signature, filters, etc
    • G Suite settings including calendar sharing and nickname per Google's directions

If any abnormality are discovered while completing the above steps, submit a service request immediately.
