Frequently Asked Questions About Emma and Google Groups

Google Groups are used for collaboration email lists and forums. All members of the group are allowed to respond or to post messages to the group. Emma email marketing and mailing lists will be used for broadcast announcement email. Members of the group are NOT allowed to respond or to post messages to the group. Emma offers a myriad of benefits to ensure all email communications are successful, including in-depth reporting metrics that reveal how the target audience is engaging with your message. Emma features include:

To receive an Emma account and log in, please review the Emma Training Manual and complete the 10-question assessment quiz. Due to the overwhelming interest in Emma, please allow 4-5 business days for UCM to evaluate your assessment and set up access.

Log in to https://webmail.oakland.edu , then click on the Google Apps 9 square icon in the upper right corner, then click on Groups. (Or you can navigate to https://groups.google.com after you have logged in)

Click on "My groups", then manage.

To invite members: on the left side, click the drop-down for Members, and select Invite members. For more information see Invite People to your Group.

To add members without an invitation: on the left side, click the drop-down for Members, and select Direct add members. For more information about adding members see Adding People to your Group.

Once you click manage, you are taken to the “All Members” page where you will see the list of members.

To remove a member from the list, place a checkmark in the box to the left of the member's name that you would like to remove. Click the “Actions” drop-down box, select “Remove from group” near the bottom of the menu.
- On the left side, click the drop-down for Permissions, and select Basic permissions.
- Next to Join the group, select “Anyone in the organization”, “Only invited users”, or “Anyone in the organization can ask.”
- At the top, click Save.
- On the left side, click the drop-down for Permissions, and select Basic permissions.
- Next to Allow members external to this organization, check “Allow new users not in oakland.edu”.
- At the top, click Save.
- On the left side, click the drop-down for Permissions, and select Basic permissions.
- Next to Post, check “All members of the group”, or select from the drop down menu, “Owners of the group”, “Managers of the group”, “All members of the group”, “All organization members”, or “Public”
- At the top, click Save.
- On the left side, click the drop-down for Roles, and select Roles.
- At the top, click Save.

- On the left side, click the drop-down for Information, and select Directory.
- Next to Group directory, you can check or uncheck the option to list your group in the directory.
- At the top, click Save
- On the left side, click the drop-down for Members, and select All members.
- At the top, click Save.
Here, if you have the correct permissions, you can see member’s role, email address, delivery settings, the date they joined, and their posting settings. For more information about membership settings, click here.
- On the left side, click the drop-down for Settings, and select Moderation.
- At the top, click Save.
