Matilda HPC Cluster

Tags AAC

This service enables faculty, research staff, and graduate students at Oakland University to obtain accounts on the Matilda High Performance Computing (HPC) Cluster. This resource supports computationally intensive research and academic projects across various disciplines. Principal Investigators (PIs) can request accounts for themselves and their team members. Graduate students and research staff may also submit requests, which must be approved by their supervising PI. Each user is allocated a home directory with 50 GB of storage, and project spaces are available for collaborative work.

Users can also report a problem with the Matilda HPC, including login problems, storage issues, job failures, or performance concerns. Users are encouraged to provide detailed information about the issue, including error messages and recent activities, to expedite troubleshooting.

Who is Eligible?

Active Faculty, Research Staff, or Graduate Students approved by the Principal Investigator (PI).

Prerequisites and Expectations

Each request is reviewed by the Academic & Administrative Computing Services team to ensure compliance with research and academic computing policies. Principal Investigators (PIs) must approve access requests for graduate students and research staff before accounts are created. Once approved, new users will receive account credentials and instructions for accessing the cluster. Requests for additional storage or project spaces are also reviewed to ensure proper resource allocation based on research needs.

Reported issues will be sent to the Academic & Administrative Computing Services team, who will perform an assessment and necessary troubleshooting steps.

Cost

Base Allocation:
All OU-affiliated researchers and their lab members receive an individual allocation of 50 GB of home directory storage and 10 TB of scratch (/scratch/users) storage on the Matilda cluster. This allocation allows OU-affiliated researchers access to the Matilda cluster and to submit jobs as part of a PI project/group.

PIs are also provided with shared project (and project scratch) space for research projects or group projects. These allocations are assigned to the PI and can be used by members of their group. Base allocations are as follows:

  • CPU hours: 1,000,000 per year, refreshed annually

  • GPU hours: 50,000 per year, refreshed annually

  • Shared project/group storage: 1 TB (/projects directory)

  • Shared project/group scratch storage3: 10 TB (/scratch/projects)

Researchers who need additional computational time beyond the annual base allocation or additional storage can purchase additional resources as noted at https://kb.oakland.edu/uts/HPCPricing.
