University Device Migration

Summary

Oakland University is migrating OU-managed computers from the legacy ADMNET domain to a new Active Directory (AD) domain. This migration improves device security, system reliability, and device management capabilities.

Departments will be scheduled for migration by OU Technology Services. The migration is performed primarily through automated processes that is scheduled to occur outside of business hours to reduce disruption.

Body

Who Is Affected?

Faculty and staff using OU-managed Windows computers connected to the university network. Departments will receive advance notification when they are scheduled for migration.

Password Reset Recommendation Before Migration

  • Synchronize your NetID password with your Microsoft account with the steps below;
  • If your passwords are not synchronized before migration, you may experience sign-in issues when logging into your computer after migration.

How to Reset Your NetID Password

  1. Go to https://netid.oakland.edu
  2. Sign in using your current NetID credentials.
  3. Follow the prompts to reset your password.

Resetting your password through the NetID website ensures your password is synchronized across all OU systems.

Important

If you recently reset your password using the Windows login screen, you should reset it again through the NetID website before migration.

What Should I Do During the Migration Window?

Users should:

  • Leave their computer powered on.
  • Connect to the wired network when working on campus if possible or Grizznet-Secure Wi-Fi.
  • If your device is connected to Wi-Fi, you must confirm you are connected to Grizznet-Secure or set it to connect automatically in the system tray.
  • Save and close work before leaving for the day.
  • Store important files in a network share or approved storage locations. (e.g., Google Drive, OneDrive, etc.)
  • If you use a device to work remotely, that device will need to be brought on campus and connected to the Ethernet during the migration window. If your office does not have space or proper Ethernet ports, please contact the OU Tech Center for further accommodations.

What Happens During Migration?

During the migration process:

  • Your computer may automatically reboot one or more times.
  • Migration may occur over multiple days as your device receives and processes migration policies.
  • Your device must remain powered on and connected to the network.
  • OU Technology Services will monitor migration progress remotely.

What Will Change After Migration?

After your device is migrated:

  • You will continue signing in using your NetID and password.
  • The Windows login screen may appear slightly different.
  • Your first login may take slightly longer.

What Will Not Change?

The migration does not change:

  • Access to university email or applications.
  • Installed OU-approved software.
  • Your personal files or desktop settings.

When Should I Contact the OU Tech Center?

Contact the OU Tech Center for assistance if:

  • If you are unable to log into your computer after migration (allow 20 min for first login and 3 restarts).
  • If your files or desktop items appear missing.
  • If your network drives or printers are unavailable.

Administrative Access After Migration

  • Privileged access will be managed through Admin By Request software.
  • When administrative rights are needed, users will submit a request through the Admin By Request prompt detailed in this link.
  • If you require administrative access for university business purposes, follow the instructions in the article above or contact the OU Tech Center.
