How to Set Up Microsoft Outlook

This article guides the user through installing and setting up both new Outlook and Outlook classic.

There are two ways you can use Microsoft Outlook. One is using the new and current version of Outlook, and the other is using the legacy Outlook Classic. Depending on the version you are looking for please follow the instructions. Please ensure you have Outlook installed. If you do not have Outlook installed, please refer to this guide to install Microsoft 365 Applications.

Who is Eligible?

Active Faculty, Staff, and Students

New Outlook (Default version)

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook. The new Outlook is displayed without the (classic) notation next to it. Log in using your Oakland University email.
  2. Outlook will open a browser window to sync data with your gmail account and Google services. Select your OU Google account and press continue.
  3. Outlook will be successfully synced with your gmail account and you are set-up.

Outlook Classic

  1. Open Outlook (classic) and enter in your Oakland University email address.
  2. Authorize Microsoft to access your Oakland University Google account and click “continue”.
  3. You should receive a message saying that your account was successfully added. It should look similar to the image below. Please make sure that it states IMAP over your email address instead of POP or POP3.
