Overview
This article contains information for users who are unable to enroll in the strongly recommended Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) method, Microsoft Authenticator, and require a security key (hardware token) as an alternative.
A security key is a physical, USB device that can be used to verify your identity and log-in to your Oakland University account, instead of using Microsoft Authenticator.
Obtaining a Security Key from Oakland University
Individuals who require special accommodations, or do not own a device that is compatible with Microsoft Authenticator can be provisioned one security key (hardware token) by the Oakland University Technology Center at no cost to them.
Faculty, staff, and students can request this security key be issued to them from the form below:
Students who need a security key due to requiring special accommodations will need to work with Disability Support Services instead of filling out the form above. Disability Support Services will refer students to the OU Technology Center when they are able to receive and register their security key. If you are a student requiring accommodations, please fill out the "online registration form" if you are not already registered with DSS:
Keys will be retrieved and registered at the OU Technology Center, located in Room 44 of the Oakland Center.
Replacement Keys/Non-OU Issued Keys
Oakland University only issues one security key to users at no cost. If a security key was lost or damaged, a user can purchase a replacement key from any authorized in-store or online retailer.
Please note, only specific models and firmware versions of the YubiKey security key are supported for use with Oakland University accounts. The two compatible YubiKey security keys available for purchase can be found below from the YubiCo website:
If you are able to find a YubiKey physical security key from another reputable retailer aside from the YubiCo store, you must ensure that the key matches the model name above.
Advanced users may also purchase a second security key if they would like, and the OU Technology Center will be able to assist with registering this key on-request. However, the user must ensure their security key model matches what is listed above.
Registering & Using a Security Key
The OU Technology Center provides assistance for registering security keys after a user submits the Request or Register a Security Key form.
For advanced users who would like to register their security key manually after receiving a Temporary Access Pass (TAP) code from the OU Technology Center, a full guide for manually registering and using your YubiKey security key to sign-in to your Oakland University account can be found below.
