How to Update macOS

Overview

Upgrading your Mac to the latest supported version of macOS ensures your device remains secure, compatible with university systems, and supported by IT. This guide walks you through the steps to check for and install the latest version of macOS.

Before You Begin

  • Plug in your Mac: Ensure your Mac is connected to power if it's a laptop.
  • Backup your data: While upgrades are generally safe, it's a good idea to back up your important files using Time Machine or save them to an OU shared drive.
  • Save your work: macOS updates will reboot your Mac. Make sure you save your documents before updating.

Install macOS Updates

Option 1: Using System Settings (for macOS 13 Ventura and newer)

  1. Click the Apple menu  in the top-left corner.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. Click General from the sidebar, then click Software Update.
  4. Your Mac will check for updates.
    • If an update is available, click Update Now or Upgrade Now.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Your Mac may restart several times during the process. This is normal.

Option 2: Using System Preferences (for macOS 12 Monterey and older)

  1. Click the Apple menu  in the top-left corner.
  2. Select System Preferences.
  3. Click Software Update.
  4. If an update is available, click Update Now or Upgrade Now.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Your Mac may restart several times during the process. This is normal.

Not Seeing an Update?

If your Mac does not show a newer version of macOS:

  • Make sure you're connected to the Internet.
  • Confirm your Mac meets the hardware requirements for the new OS. See the macOS Sonoma minimum compatible computers list from Apple.
  • Try restarting your Mac and checking again.
  • If your Mac is already up-to-date, you may already be on the latest available macOS version from Apple, or the latest macOS version that Oakland University allows.
