Overview
American Data Security is Oakland University’s preferred vendor for certified hard drive destruction. Their services ensure the secure and compliant disposal of data-bearing devices, such as hard drives, solid-state drives (SSDs), and other digital storage media.

Why Use These Services?
When computers, servers, or external storage devices reach end-of-life, simply deleting files or reformatting the drive is not sufficient to securely remove data. While the OU Technology Center offers secure wiping services for most storage devices, some drives may not be wipeable due to:
- Hard drive failure
- Encryption issues
- Compatibility or interface issues with OU Technology Center equipment
In such cases, physical destruction is the only safe and compliant alternative. Hard drive shredding ensures:
- Complete data destruction
- Protection of confidential or regulated data (e.g., FERPA, HIPPA, financial records)
- Compliance with university policies and industry standards
