This article explains the steps to take if your Oakland University Webmail account is compromised, including resetting your password, signing out suspicious devices, and removing unauthorized settings.

Who is Eligible?

Active Faculty, Staff, or Students

Information: 

If your Webmail account has been compromised, please perform the following steps. Do not skip any of these steps.

  1. Immediately change your password at https://netid.oakland.edu/profile/ click “Reset NetID password with Grizzly ID and PIN” or “NetID Password Manager” depending on the credentials you know.
  2. Sign out of all other sessions on your Gmail account: Log in to your Oakland University email and scroll to the bottom of the page, click “Details” on the right. In the pop-up windows click “Security Checkup,” click “Your Devices” and review the devices that are signed into your Webmail account. If you do not recognize a device or if one seems suspicious, click on the device and click “Sign out.”
  3. Disable any unknown forwarding email addresses located in your settings: Click the gear located in the top right-hand corner of your OU email inbox, select “Settings,” and then click on the “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” tab. Make sure there are no unknown email addresses here. If there are, remove them.
  4. Remove any unknown filters: Click the gear located in the top right-hand corner of your OU email inbox, select “Settings” and then click on the “Filters and Blocked Addresses” tab. Make sure that the filters are only those set up by you. Remove any that you did not set up.

If you use MS Outlook, Mac Mail, or a smartphone to receive your OU email messages, you must enter your new password to receive emails again.

Monitor your account to ensure there are no strange activities on the account.
