Logging Into Multiple NetID Accounts

Summary

A guide on how to log out of Single Sign-On (SSO) to access the Account Picker screen to switch/select an account.

Body

Overview

When accessing Oakland University services integrated with Single Sign-On / SSO, your browser caches active session credentials to allow convenient access across multiple campus systems. If your device is centrally managed, your account will be "Connected to Windows".

If you are managing multiple accounts, or trying to switch to a different user profile, you may find that navigating to an OU service automatically logs you back into your previous account without asking for credentials.

Best Practice: The recommended method for accessing shared or guest accounts is to Delegate Access, rather than switching accounts.

To force Single Sign-On / SSO to display the Account Picker screen, allowing you to choose a different account or sign in with new credentials, you must complete a full sign-out process.

Best Practice: Delegate Account Access

If you regularly use more than one account for your daily tasks, best practice is to use "Delegated Access" to access the other account's email through your browser. Please see the article below for more information.

Performing a Full SSO Sign-Out

To properly clear your active session across Single Sign-On / SSO services:

  1. Open your active application (e.g., webmail.oakland.edu or office.oakland.edu).
  2. Click on your profile picture or initials icon in the top right corner of the window.
  3. Select Sign out (or Sign out of all accounts).
  4. Wait for the sign-out process to finish. You should see a confirmation message stating "You signed out of your account" or "Hang on a moment while we sign you out."
    • Screenshot of the "Your signed out of your accounts" SSO page.
  5. Close ALL open browser windows and tabs.

Note: Leaving other browser tabs open will keep your single sign-on session active in the background, preventing the Account Picker from appearing on your next visit.

  6. Re-open your browser and navigate back to the service you are trying to log in to. You will now be presented with the Microsoft Account Picker screen to choose or enter a new account.
    • Photo describing account picker screen. Two accounts are listed.
