Overview

If you suspect that your Oakland University (OU) NetID account has been accessed by someone else or if the account is behaving suspiciously, it’s important to act quickly to secure your information to prevent further misuse. This article outlines the steps to take if you suspect your NetID, Grizzly ID, or OU Email account has been compromised.

Signs Your Account May Be Compromised

  • You cannot log in to your OU email account.
  • Your account is sending emails that you did not send.
  • You see unknown forwarding addresses or filters in your OU Email account.
  • You notice strange log in locations or devices.
  • You clicked on a suspicious link or responded to a phishing message.

Immediate Steps to Take

Reset Your NetID Password and PIN

  1. Reset your PIN by clicking here.
  2. Reset your NetID password by clicking here. Choose a strong password that you have not used before.

You will receive a confirmation message on the password reset tool, when your NetID password and PIN are successfully reset and secured.

Check Financial and Academic Information

Visit sail.oakland.edu and verify your personal information:

  • Direct deposit bank account information is correct.
  • Course registration and personal details are correct.

Review Your OU Email Settings

Sign in to your OU Email and check for:

  • Unwanted forwarding settings.
  • Filters that you did not setup.
  • Active sessions that you do not recognize.

Additional Safety Recommendations

  • Change passwords on any personal accounts tied to your OU Email (e.g., banking, shopping, social media).
  • If your direct deposit information was changed, consider freezing your credit to prevent fraud. Visit usa.gov/credit-freeze for more information.
  • Only accept two-factor verification (Duo) requests if you initiated the request.
